We report on gun law, rulemaking and the courts. That is a subject where being a day out of date matters, so read this page before you act on anything here.

This page says plainly what Freedom’s Lodge is for, what it is not for, how it makes money, and what you are responsible for. It applies to every page on this site. It sits alongside our terms of service and our privacy policy, and where those documents govern a subject, they control.

Who publishes this site

Freedom’s Lodge is published by Brand Avalanche Media, Inc., an Illinois corporation. Editorial decisions are made by our editors. Advertisers and sponsors do not review articles before publication and do not decide what we cover or what we conclude.

Accuracy, dates and corrections

We name the source of the figures we publish and the date or edition they were read from. Published standards get revised, prices move, rules change, and manufacturers change specifications without notice. A page that was correct when it was written can be overtaken by events.

We do not guarantee that anything here is complete, current or free of error. If you find a mistake, tell us what page it is on, what is wrong, and where the right figure comes from, and we will correct the page itself rather than bury a note at the bottom.

Advertising, sponsorship and how this site makes money

• We are supported by advertising. Ads on this site are served by third parties and their presence is not an endorsement by us.
• No link on this site earns us a commission. We do not place affiliate links, and nothing you buy after clicking away from here pays us. When we link to a retailer or a manufacturer, it is so you can check the source or look at the thing for yourself.
• If a page or a placement is ever paid for, it is labeled as such on the page where it appears, not only here.
• Money does not move a number. Advertising or sponsorship never changes a measurement, a rating or which products appear in a comparison. Competing products stay in the table. Where a page covers a category one of our sponsors competes in, the page says so.
• We are not a retailer. We do not sell, ship, transfer or broker anything discussed on this site, and we are not party to any purchase you make elsewhere. Price, availability, shipping restrictions, returns and warranty are between you and the seller.

Reviews, ratings and endorsements

We do not publish invented reviews, and we do not publish reviews written by anyone with a connection to the product that has not been disclosed. We do not pay for positive sentiment, we do not buy followers or engagement, and we do not suppress criticism to protect a commercial relationship. Where anyone connected to this company has a stake in something we cover, the page says so.

Links to other sites

We link to manufacturers, government agencies, standards bodies, retailers and other publishers. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it.

Names, trademarks and images

Product names, company names, logos and marks belong to their owners and are used here to identify and comment on the things we write about. Their use does not imply that we are affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any of those companies.

Our content, and copyright complaints

Text, photographs, charts and data graphics published here are ours or are used with permission, except where a source is credited. Do not republish them wholesale. Quote a passage, credit us, and link to the page, and we have no quarrel with you.

Firearms and ammunition

Read this part before you act on anything on this site.

• Safe handling is yours, every time. Treat every firearm as loaded, keep it pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target, and know what is beyond your target. Nothing here replaces the manual that came with your firearm or a qualified gunsmith who can put hands on it.
• Confirm the chambering stamped on the barrel matches the ammunition before you load it. Cartridges with similar names are not interchangeable, and some of them will chamber in the wrong firearm. Published industry standards exist for exactly this reason, and we point at them rather than paraphrasing them.
• Specifications here are for reference, not for gunsmithing. We do not publish instructions for manufacturing, converting or modifying a firearm, or for defeating any safety device, and nothing here should be read as such.
• The law differs by state, by county and sometimes by city, and it changes. That includes minimum age, what may be shipped to your address, transport, magazines, features and where you may carry. Federal law is a floor, not the whole picture. Check current law where you are before you buy, build, carry or travel.
• Eyes and ears, every time, and a range or a backstop that is actually safe.

Suppressors and other registered items

Suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and other items regulated under the National Firearms Act carry their own federal process on top of ordinary firearm law, and that process has been moving. Registration requirements, forms, wait times, tax treatment and pending litigation have all changed recently and may change again.

• Nothing here is a compliance opinion. We report what agencies and courts have published, with dates. We are not telling you that you may lawfully make, buy, possess, transport or modify anything.
• Verify before you act, with the agency’s current guidance and with an attorney licensed in your state. A page that was accurate the week it was written may not describe the process you face today.
• Several states prohibit items that federal law allows, and some restrict possession, transport or use for hunting. Your state is the one that matters.
• Getting this wrong is a felony, not a paperwork problem. Treat it accordingly.

Law, legislation and rulemaking

We cover law because our readers are affected by it, not because we are qualified to advise you on it.

• We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. Reading it creates no attorney-client relationship.
• We name the statute, rule, docket or case so you can read the source yourself rather than take our word for it.
• Coverage is a snapshot with a date on it. Bills get amended, agencies reverse course, courts stay their own orders, and a non-enforcement policy is not a repeal. What is true this morning may not be true next month.
• State and local law is usually the part that decides your question, and it varies enormously. If the answer matters, ask an attorney in your state.
