Anti-Gunners Beg Biden’s L Team to Halt Lake City Ammo Sales

New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, wants to forbid civilian sale of ammunition from the Lake City facility.

We’re in receipt of one of the dumbest press releases we’ve ever seen (WARNING: Opens a .PDF), courtesy of the New York Attorney General’s office. In it, James and a coalition of 20 state attorneys general demand that America’s largest ammunition manufacturer stop sale of the ammunition it makes to civilians. The manufacturer, Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, makes ammo for the U.S. military, but it’s run by a private contractor, and they have historically always sold ammo to civilians, too.

This is what she’s demanding: “The coalition led by Attorney General James is calling on the White House of Gun Violence Prevention [SIC] to investigate the contracting and manufacturing practices that led to military-grade rounds being sold to civilians, issue a public report with recommendations about how to keep military ammunition out of civilian hands, and take steps over the long term to ensure that future production contracts prohibit the sale of military weapons and ammunition to civilians.”

Ah yes, we were wondering what Biden’s L Team (aka White House OFFICE of Gun Violence Prevention–James’ letter omits a crucial word) was going to do with its time. Now they’ll have an activity to keep them busy in between naps and making sure that the insides of their noses are very, very clean.

James’ maundering letter makes the pants-on-head insane point that “Ammunition made at Lake City has been used to kill American civilians in devastating recent mass shootings, including the Tops Supermarket massacre in Buffalo. The continued sale of this ammunition on the private market puts everyone at risk. I’m proud to join with my fellow attorneys general to raise this important issue and help ensure that weapons of war don’t make their way onto our streets.”

Wow, that’s dumb. Lake City ammo is indeed popular among American shooters for its quality and price. Yes, it’s true that criminals have used Lake City ammo, because everyone does. It’s like the “dihydrogen monoxide” argument: Yes, everyone who drinks H2O will eventually die, but that doesn’t make it anything but water.

Moving on down the release–which, believe it or not, is rendered in typeface and not crayon–we have the following howler: “The federal government has invested over $860 million to improve production at Lake City, meaning taxpayer funds are subsidizing production of these dangerous rounds sold to civilians.”

For the record, the ammunition produced at Lake City is “small arms” ammo … meaning bog-standard 5.56 and 9mm rounds. There’s nothing more “dangerous” about it than any other ammo sold in America. The presser goes on to specify, “The coalition of attorneys general notes that Lake City rounds have become the ‘ammunition of choice’ for use in mass shootings … The Buffalo mass shooter even praised Lake City ammunition as ‘the best barrier penetration ammo I can get’.”

It’s tough to be sure what, exactly, the NY AG is driving at here. Does she mean full-metal-jacket ammo? The cheap, simple ammo we feed our guns for target practice? I think so.

Of course, it appears that there are 20 other signatories to the NY AG’s demand. There are few surprises on the list; as you may expect, it’s largely dominated by “blue” states and Queen Grisham’s New Mexico. Here’s the peanut gallery: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.

What does this mean for you, the gun owner? Well, a lot depends on whether there’s a change of leadership during the 2024 elections, but for right now, expect ammo prices to go up. And if the L Team is on the job, you might want to invest in Pampers, too.

Editor’s Note: Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that our friends at Two Birds Outdoors have consistently had the best availability and prices since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.
