Smells Like Infringement: Gun Banners in the News (As Usual)

Infringement. Either that or someone’s boiling broccoli.

My nana always told me, “Trace, if you can’t say something nice about somebody, you just come sit down right here next to me.”

Every week, the anti-gunners open their cake-holes with some harebrained scheme that even they know perfectly well won’t help reduce violence. And every week, the mainstream media also pretends that not only do they believe said scheme will work, but that questioning them is tantamount to terrorism. Although the datelines change and the talking heads sometimes have fresh Botox, what always remains the same is that we will be assured that none of their plans will infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. But soft–what wind through yonder cheeks break?

Is someone making popcorn?

Oh Yeah? Well, You’ll be Sorry when I’m President!

I’m curious: Do none of the Democrats in Congress own a copy of an eighth-grade Civics textbook? If someone does, please kindly lend it to Speaker Pelosi and Senator Murphy, so it can be explained to them that no, the President can’t just enforce a gun ban by executive fiat. Yes, that’s what Pelosi seemed to be intimating when she said,

“Just think of what a president with different values can present to the American people. Want to talk about a national emergency? Let’s talk about today, the one year anniversary of another manifestation of the epidemic of gun violence in America. That’s a national emergency. Why don’t you declare that emergency Mr. President? I wish you would. But a Democratic president can do that. A Democratic President can declare emergencies as well.”

Of course, this was in reference to President Trump declaring a state of emergency to fund the construction of the wall along our southern border. Now, obviously, there’s nothing in the American process for declaring a state of emergency that allows for the suspension of the Bill of Rights. In fact, federal law specifically forbids gun confiscation or prohibition during emergencies. She should know about that law, given that it was passed shortly after Hurricane Katrina when she was in office…over her vehement protests.

I don’t think they all could have dealt it.

Maybe If We Just Say it Louder, That’ll Make it True!

As it turns out, the dream of one day waking up as president, waving the magic President Wand, and ridding America of all those icky guns is pretty irresistible. One senator who couldn’t bear to see it end was Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who waited until the next day after Speaker Pelosi’s remarks to lift a cheek and contribute to the discussion. Naturally, he did this over Twitter. Rather than spending the intervening time examining his bellybutton lint while an intern looked up the actual law for him, Murphy doubled down, claiming that a “Dem President can declare a gun violence emergency and institute universal background checks and an assault weapons ban by executive action.”

On the one hand, I kinda want to go back and reiterate the point I made above, that this is just wishful thinking and that no American president can do that. On the other hand, I’m starting to wonder if maybe Pelosi and Murphy want to make sure that Trump remains president until 2024…since, historically, promising American voters that you’ll take their guns away doesn’t seem to be a winning plank in the platform. At the same time, they may simply be hoping that if they say it enough times, forcefully enough, that eventually the electorate will decide they must be right and just go with it.

What’s your call, GGD readers? Are Pelosi and Murphy really that dumb, or do they just think that we are?
